Putting on my real armor

I had to go to the grocery store today, so I put on my “armor,” a gorgeous, fresh-from-the-package little N95 mask, which is supposed to filter out both large and small particles from the air and thus protect me from COVID-19. Then, lovingly sanitized metal shopping cart before me, I navigated the aisles with confidence, followed the one-way paths as I selected my items, then willingly stood six feet from the clerk in the checkout lane as she rung me up and sent me on my way.

Careful not to touch my face, I slipped off my mask in the car and shifted into Part 2 of my armor routine, making sure to thoroughly scrub my hands in warm water when I got back home.

Take that, coronavirus. Pandemic averted—I hope.

Scientists tell us wearing masks, keeping a distance from others, washing hands frequently, and other sanitary measures can help prevent the spread of COVID-19, so my family has been doing its part in listening to authorities and following these new public health directives. We put on our “armor” when we need to leave the house and hope it will, indeed, do its part.

But there’s a more important armor we also put on every day, and that’s one in which I have complete faith. It’s the armor of God, which is what this coffee company is named after, and it’s an armor that will never fail. Ever.

In Ephesians 6:11, we are told to, “Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes” (NIV). We are to put on the “belt of truth,” the “breastplate of righteousness,” the “shield of faith,” the “helmet of salvation,” and the “sword of the Spirit” so we can fight against evil and prevail.

That armor is, of course, Christ. Christ goes before us and stands with us. He never leaves us. He protects us, and when our earthly bodies have faded away, He guides us to our new home in heaven, with God our Father.

It’s a wonderful blessing that we have masks and hand sanitizer and other things to help us avoid getting infected with COVID-19.

But let’s not forget the most important armor we have, something we need to “armor up” in every time we leave the house, and even before we roll out of bed in the morning.

It’s the armor of God in the form of His son, Jesus. And while I’m definitely putting on my mask and taking other precautions when I head out into the world right now, it’s good to know I have one protection that will never, ever fail me: Jesus.
