Peace to you

Christmas Jesus Peace

By Pam Horton

“Now the God of peace be with you all. Amen.” Romans 15:33 (NKJV)

I was born in 1960, and my formative years were defined by the Vietnam War. My dad went to Vietnam when I was ten, so I understood the possibilities that war presented. I was probably twelve when I learned about the song, “Let There Be Peace on Earth.” I always assumed it was about war and civil unrest. It made sense in turbulent times.

The song recently came to mind and, being a Christian trying to grow in my walk, I got to thinking about it in terms of the peace of God. Think of it! Truly, it would only be the peace of God that can bring peace on earth.

As I searched for information on the song, I learned that it was written by Jill Jackson-Miller and Sy Miller in 1955 and that it wasn’t actually about international war and civil unrest—it was about the peace of God. Isn’t that awesome?

The word peace is mentioned in the Bible more than 350 times. Proverbs 16:7 tells us that we can even cause our enemies to be at peace, for “When a man’s ways please the Lord, He makes even his enemies to be at peace with him” (New King James Version).

The angels announce the birth of Jesus in Luke 2:14 with peace greetings, shouting “Glory to God in the highest, And on earth peace, goodwill toward men!” (New King James Version).

Paul expounds on the topic in Romans 12:18, “Do all that you can to live in peace with everyone” (New Living Translation).

Peace on earth can only be accomplished by having God’s peace within us and sharing it with others.

How, then, can we have peace within us? We must accept the gift of salvation, freely given. Jesus came to save us from ourselves and the worldly way in which we live. When we believe in Jesus, and that He is the Son of God, the Holy Spirit comes to be with us. Philippians 4:7 (New King James Version) tells us, “And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.”

I can tell you that when you stop trying to do things your way and put your faith and trust in God, the peace that will come upon you is like no other. I could feel the weight of my burdens lifted from my shoulders when I began to do that.

I wish this for you and hope that you will accept it.

Placing my faith and trust in God brings comfort and peace. I know that whatever happens, He is with me.

Ironically, I sang that song in church as a child so I always knew it was related to Christianity. However, neither He nor His salvation for sinful people were ever talked about there! That church was only about the “peace” between people. Unlike you, they did not acknowledge that without Christ there can be no peace. Thank you for reminding me how far the Lord has brought me!
